About Iniziragukanya

One year ago, a community of Burundians fled their home country and arrived in the United States as refugees. They had to leave virtually everything behind, including their instruments. Now, many are disconnected with their families in Burundi. They gather once a week at Brown to reconnect, enjoy company, and practice their drumming.

This page is to help them raise funds so they can purchase traditional Burundian drums for their drum ensemble.

Having drums will not only help them share their rich cultural traditions with the Providence community, but it will help them create a gathering space for their community, making their adjustment to live in the United States easier. Please support this cause with a donation. 100% of your donation will go towards supporting this group's efforts to purchase Burundian drums.

If you donate before Sunday, March 7, you also be purchasing raffle tickets! For each dollar you donate you can win tickets to a NY Knicks v. Miami Heat at Madison Square Garden for April 11th. The tickets are club seats, so you will be able to feel the HEAT (they're real sweet). Just send us a note with your donation. Thanks!

This effort is part of a class a number of us are taking in the Theater, Speech and Dance Department at Brown: "Mande Dance, Music and Culture." We will be working with this group throughout the semester, and hopefully our efforts will be able to make a real difference with them.
